What is the International Day of the Christian Martyr?

cross-7090573_640_edited.png

It is a day like any other. A family is gathered at home sharing a meal. A woman hears a knock at the door. She opens it to see an angry mob outside. Some of the men enter the home and drag her husband outside where the crowd begins to beat him, punching and kicking. Someone produces a makeshift club and brings it down on his head. They spit on his lifeless body. The woman cries out in horror and runs to kneel at his side. She looks up to see her children hauled outside. The woman starts to scream. A machete flashes in the morning light and the scream is silenced. The children are frozen with shock and fear. A sound of gunshots fills the air. The silence deepens.

Who are these men? Why did they kill them? What crime had this family committed?

These men are zealous nationalists in a country where it is illegal to worship Christ and where it is considered good and right to kill those who profess Christ. They are "...haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things... unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful" (Romans 1:30-31).

This family was guilty of professing, loving, and following Christ.

The International Day of the Christian Martyr, June 29th, honors the sacrifice of those who have been killed because of their faith in Christ. These men, women, and children chose Christ over all else. They were faithful unto death.

Will you be?

It is a glorious Sunday morning. The pastor preaches and the congregation responds with amen. Through the doors behind them a man quietly enters. No one notices him at first, not until he shouts for attention. Startled, everyone turns to look. The man pulls out a gun and says, "All of you who believe in Jesus stand up." Several people stand to their feet. The man shoots and kills them all, one by one. Shocked, you freeze in fear. The gunman looks around and settles his eyes on you. "Do you believe in Jesus?" he growls. What will you do? Will you drop to the floor to hide? Will you try to run? Will you remain in your seat? Or, will you stand?

“Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.” Matthew 10:32-33, NIV

Hour of Power

Let us gather together to pray, remembering that "we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places." But "do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, great and awesome, and fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses”.
